When he joined the Department, the extra Clerk was free during at least half his time to attend to general duty, but the increase of money has almost entirely absorbed this Officer's time, so that he really cannot give much assistance in the general work of the office.
His duty is called shroff, but his duties are very multifarious. He especially looks after the whole matter of money, sees that parcels are ready, that labels are offered beforehand, that coins are in attendance. In 1877, this Officer was keeping everything working smoothly, selling stamps when required, and was in attendance pretty much round the clock. That is where the duty is really hard on the Chinese staff.
